Leaving Bubble: what it costs and how to do it
By Nathan Guigui, Founder of GUIGUI Tech · Facts checked against the official sources listed at the end of the article
Leaving Bubble almost always means rebuilding the application: Bubble lets you export your data, but not your app's code. The cost therefore depends mostly on the number of screens, business rules and integrations to rebuild; for an app that has found its users, expect several weeks of work and a five-figure budget. With proper preparation, the switchover can happen with no downtime for your users.
Leaving is not mandatory: Bubble is an excellent tool, and many companies are right to stay on it. The information about Bubble below was checked against its official documentation as of October 2026.
Should you really leave Bubble?
Staying on Bubble is often the most cost-effective decision if the app works, costs stay predictable and customers aren't asking for anything Bubble can't do. A rebuild takes time, money and your attention.
Staying is generally reasonable if:
- your product is still looking for its market and changes every month;
- your Bubble bill remains small relative to your revenue;
- no requirement is blocked by the platform;
- nobody (customer, investor, partner) requires you to own the code.
What situations push companies to leave Bubble?
The reasons for leaving Bubble rarely come down to a flaw in the tool: they are situations where Bubble no longer fits the company's stage, most often usage-based cost, performance, advanced mobile needs or code ownership.
Costs climb with usage
Workload units are the unit Bubble uses to measure and bill an app's server consumption. According to the Activity types page of the Bubble manual, every page load, database search, workflow action or call to an external service consumes them. According to the Pricing and plans page, each plan includes a monthly volume, and beyond it Bubble bills overages per block of 1,000 units, if you have enabled them. As your user base grows, so does the bill. Bubble provides optimization guides: that is the first thing to try before concluding you need to leave.
Performance or features are blocking you
Heavy processing on large volumes, demanding real-time features, deep integration with an internal system: if you spend more time working around the platform than building your product, that is a signal.
You want a mobile app that goes further
According to the Native iOS and Android page of its documentation, Bubble offers a native iOS and Android mobile app editor, still in beta as of October 2026. It covers many use cases. If you need advanced device features, fine control over the experience or extensive offline behavior, a custom-built app (for example in React Native) may be a better fit.
Platform dependency and due diligence
Bubble's Application and data ownership page is clear: your data and your design belong to you, but Bubble retains ownership of the underlying code, and a Bubble app can only run on Bubble. During a fundraise or an acquisition, some investors flag this as a point of attention.
What can you export from a Bubble app?
A Bubble app lets you export its data and files, but neither its code nor its users' passwords. According to the Exporting data page, exports are available as CSV, JSON or newline-delimited JSON, and the Data API is recommended for large volumes.
| Item | Exportable? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Database records | Yes | CSV, JSON or newline-delimited JSON export from the Data tab, or through the Data API for large volumes |
| Files and images | Yes | The links are included in the export; you need to download and re-host them |
| Design | Partly | Bubble says it can help export the design |
| App code and logic | No | Bubble offers no code export: screens and workflows have to be rebuilt |
| User passwords | No | Bubble stores them hashed and salted, invisible even to you |
The password problem
Hashing is a transformation that turns a password into an unreadable fingerprint that cannot be reversed. Bubble's User accounts page specifies that neither you nor Bubble can see passwords, and the documentation describes no way to export these hashes. You therefore cannot transfer passwords as they are. The two approaches below are commonly discussed in the Bubble community; they are not part of the official documentation and need to be validated for your app:
- Reset: you import the accounts (email, profile, history) into the new app, then each user receives a link to choose a new password.
- Migration on login: during a transition period, the new app checks the username and password against the old Bubble app (through an API workflow exposed on the Bubble side); if they are correct, it stores the password in its own system. Users notice nothing. Accounts that stay inactive during this period then go through the reset.
Key point
Before committing, run a full export of your data and open it. You will often find unused fields, duplicates or unexpected formats. An example documented by Bubble: durations are exported as text ("2 days") even though they are stored in milliseconds.
What are the alternatives for leaving Bubble?
There are four options when you hit Bubble's limits: optimize the app on Bubble, move to another no-code tool, rebuild with custom code, or migrate in stages.
- Stay and optimize. Reducing workload unit consumption (better-built searches, fewer recursive workflows, fewer server-side actions) can be enough to push the question back by several years.
- Move to another no-code or low-code tool. Useful if your main need is different (for example an internal tool). Be aware: you still rebuild, and the dependency simply moves to another platform.
- Rebuild with custom code. You get code you own, hosted wherever you want, with no platform limits. It is the most expensive option up front.
- Move in stages. You keep Bubble for the interface and first move heavy processing to an external server called through an API, or you rebuild one part of the app (the customer portal, the mobile app) before the rest. This spreads the effort, but means maintaining two systems for a while.
How do you migrate a Bubble app with no downtime?
A zero-downtime migration off Bubble follows five steps: an inventory of the app, the choice of technology, the rebuild, the migration of data and users, then a gradual switchover with the old Bubble app kept as a fallback.
1. The inventory
List every screen, every data type, every workflow, every plugin and every connected service (payments, email, Zapier, Make). This is the most underestimated step: a two-year-old Bubble app often contains dozens of business rules scattered across workflows that nobody documented.
2. Choosing the technology
For a web app, Next.js (a React-based web framework) is a common choice. For mobile, React Native is a framework that allows a single codebase for iOS and Android. On the server side, Node.js and a PostgreSQL database cover most needs. What matters is choosing widely used technologies, so you can easily change providers or hire.
3. The rebuild
It is an opportunity to fix what bothered your users, but keep the scope under control: adding features during the migration quickly derails the project.
4. Migrating data and users
You write a script that reads your data through the export or the Data API, cleans it and inserts it into the new database. You run it several times as a dry run before launch day, then one last time just before the switchover to pick up the most recent data. Passwords follow one of the two approaches described above.
5. The zero-downtime switchover
You test the new app with a few users, then switch the domain name over at a quiet time. The Bubble app stays accessible for a few weeks, just in case. For mobile, plan for publication on the app stores.
How much does it cost to leave Bubble?
The price of leaving Bubble depends less on Bubble than on the app itself: number of screens, complexity of the business rules, number of integrations, whether there is a mobile app, volume of data to migrate, roles and permissions. An app with a simple customer portal and a back office is rebuilt much faster than a marketplace with payments, messaging and a mobile app.
Also account for recurring costs after the migration: hosting, third-party services, maintenance and new features. They replace your Bubble subscription rather than adding to it, but they are not zero. Compare over two or three years, not over one month.
What pitfalls should you avoid when leaving Bubble?
The main pitfalls of a migration off Bubble are hidden business rules, plugins, forgotten Zapier or Make automations and lost search rankings.
- Hidden business rules. A condition in a workflow, a calculation on a page, a privacy rule on a data type: each one has to be found and reproduced.
- Plugins. Every Bubble plugin hides a feature to rebuild or replace with an equivalent service.
- Zapier and Make automations. They are often connected to Bubble and forgotten. List them and plan to reconnect them.
- Search rankings. If your app has public pages indexed by Google, keep the same URLs or set up redirects, otherwise you lose your traffic.
Checklist before leaving Bubble
- I have checked that optimizing consumption is not enough.
- I have run a full export of my data and reviewed it.
- I have a list of every screen, workflow, plugin and integration.
- I have decided how to handle user passwords.
- I have listed the public pages and their URLs.
- I have a written, frozen scope for the first version.
