Offers - Expo SDK upgrade and New Architecture migration

From €6,500 excl. VAT · 2 to 4 weeks · Fixed price

Since React Native 0.82 and Expo SDK 55, the old architecture is gone: the New Architecture is the only option. If your app is still on Expo SDK 54 or React Native 0.81 with newArchEnabled=false, every upgrade is now blocked. We bring your Expo or React Native app up to the latest stable version, move it to the New Architecture and release the new version on the stores.

This is for you if…

  • •Your Expo or React Native app is in production and fairly recent, but a few versions behind
  • •You are stuck on Expo SDK 54 or React Native 0.81 because the old architecture is still enabled
  • •One or more dependencies are not compatible with Fabric and TurboModules
  • •Your team has no time to handle the upgrade on top of the product roadmap
  • •You want a fixed price, not open-ended time and materials

Upgrade or full migration?

This offer is for apps that are a few versions behind, not for apps that have not moved in years.

  • •Expo and New Architecture upgrade (this offer): recent app, overall healthy stack, a few version steps and the New Architecture to enable. From €6,500 excl. VAT.
  • •Full React Native migration: very old app, many native modules, abandoned dependencies, sometimes an architecture overhaul. From €18,000 excl. VAT.
  • •Not sure which one applies to you? The React Native audit for €1,500 excl. VAT gives you the answer in 5 business days, with a costed plan.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Dependency diagnosis

We run expo-doctor, check your dependencies against React Native Directory and flag the libraries that are not compatible with the New Architecture. The fixed price is set at the end of this diagnosis.

  2. Step 2

    New Architecture step

If your app still runs on the old architecture, we first move to Expo SDK 54 / React Native 0.81, enable the New Architecture and make sure everything works before going further.

  3. Step 3

Upgrade to the latest stable version

Expo SDK upgraded one version at a time, along with dependencies and native code, on a dedicated branch: your production app is not affected.

  4. Step 4

    Testing and release

Tests on physical iOS and Android devices, acceptance testing of your critical flows with you, then a new version released on the App Store and Google Play.

Included in the base price (€6,500 excl. VAT)

  • •Upgrade to the latest stable Expo SDK and React Native, one version at a time
  • •Move to the New Architecture: Fabric, TurboModules, bridgeless mode, with Hermes
  • •Dependency updates and breaking changes resolved, checked with expo-doctor
  • •Testing on iOS and Android (physical devices and emulators) and acceptance testing of your critical flows
  • •Release of the new version on the App Store and Google Play
  • •Upgrade documentation for your team: what changed and how to handle the next upgrades
  • •30 days of support after delivery: if something related to the upgrade breaks, we fix it

What the New Architecture does not do: let's be honest

Moving to the New Architecture is now required to keep updating your app. But it is not a magic wand, and some things are out of our hands:

  • •A library abandoned by its maintainer will not become compatible on its own. It has to be replaced, forked or have its native part rewritten: that is priced separately
  • •React Native's interop layers run many older libraries, but not all of them, and not always perfectly. We check them one library at a time
  • •The New Architecture does not fix a performance problem that comes from your code (unnecessary re-renders, poorly optimized lists). We will point it out, but it is not included
  • •An Expo SDK upgrade changes native code: it cannot be shipped over the air with EAS Update. A new version has to be released on the stores, with Apple and Google review

If your app has too many abandoned dependencies or in-house native modules, the diagnosis shows it right away. In that case, we tell you plainly and point you to the full React Native migration rather than sell you an upgrade that will not hold.

What we need to get started

  • •Read access to your Git repo (an NDA is signed first)
  • •Your Apple Developer and Google Play accounts, or access to your EAS account
  • •The list of critical flows to test
  • •A technical contact on your side available for sign-offs

Not sure where your app stands?

During the call, we look at your Expo version, your configuration and your main dependencies together. If the app is more complex than it looks, we start with the React Native audit for €1,500 excl. VAT / 5 business days: you get a costed plan, and the audit fee is deducted from the Expo / New Architecture upgrade (or the full migration) if you confirm within 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an Expo SDK upgrade with a move to the New Architecture cost?
An Expo SDK upgrade with a move to the New Architecture by GUIGUI Tech costs from €6,500 excl. VAT, fixed price, over 2 to 4 weeks. The price covers the version upgrade, enabling the New Architecture, updating dependencies, iOS and Android testing, publishing to the stores and 30 days of support. It becomes fixed after a dependency diagnosis.
How long does an Expo SDK upgrade to the New Architecture take?
An Expo SDK upgrade with a move to the New Architecture takes 2 to 4 weeks with GUIGUI Tech, plus Apple and Google’s review time. Replacing incompatible libraries or porting in-house native modules can add a few days, which is priced before work begins.
Can the New Architecture still be disabled in React Native?
No. Since React Native 0.82 and Expo SDK 55, the New Architecture is the only architecture available: the newArchEnabled=false and RCT_NEW_ARCH_ENABLED=0 options are ignored. React Native 0.81 and Expo SDK 54 are the last versions that still allow the legacy architecture. GUIGUI Tech supports apps stuck on these versions with its Expo and New Architecture upgrade offer, from €6,500 excl. VAT.
Do I need to go through Expo SDK 54 before upgrading to the latest version of Expo?
Yes, if your app still runs on the legacy architecture. The React Native team recommends first moving to React Native 0.81 or Expo SDK 54, enabling the New Architecture there and checking that everything works, before going higher. This is the method GUIGUI Tech follows in its Expo and New Architecture upgrade offer.
What is the latest version of Expo SDK?
Expo releases several new versions of its SDK every year. GUIGUI Tech’s Expo upgrade offer, from €6,500 excl. VAT, targets the latest stable version available at the time of the project. Recent versions of Expo SDK and React Native only allow the New Architecture, so the upgrade includes that move.
What if a React Native library is incompatible with the New Architecture?
A library that is incompatible with the New Architecture must be updated, replaced with a maintained equivalent or forked. For example, Expo recommends replacing react-native-fs with expo-file-system. In its Expo upgrade offer, GUIGUI Tech identifies these libraries with expo-doctor and React Native Directory, and charges €500 excl. VAT per library for their replacement, priced before work begins.
What is the difference between an Expo upgrade and a full React Native migration?
GUIGUI Tech’s Expo and New Architecture upgrade (from €6,500 excl. VAT, 2 to 4 weeks) is for relatively recent apps that are a few versions behind. The full React Native migration (from €18,000 excl. VAT, 4 to 8 weeks) is for very old apps with many native modules or abandoned dependencies. If in doubt, the €1,500 excl. VAT React Native audit settles the question; it is deducted from the chosen engagement if you confirm within 30 days.
Can an Expo SDK upgrade be shipped with EAS Update, without going through the stores?
No. An Expo SDK upgrade changes the app’s native code, so it cannot be sent over the air with EAS Update: a new version must be published on the App Store and Google Play. This publication is included in GUIGUI Tech’s Expo and New Architecture upgrade offer.
Does the New Architecture make a React Native app faster?
Not necessarily. The New Architecture (Fabric, TurboModules, bridgeless) modernizes how React Native works internally, but it does not fix performance problems that come from the app’s own code, such as unnecessary renders or poorly optimized lists. GUIGUI Tech flags them during the Expo upgrade, but fixing them is not included in the €6,500 excl. VAT fixed price.
How does payment work for an Expo and New Architecture upgrade?
An Expo and New Architecture upgrade by GUIGUI Tech is paid in two installments: 30% upfront, 70% on delivery. Invoices are issued by our company, a French SAS.
